What is your job?
I am a Scientist on the Biochemistry Research & Innovation team that develops new PCR-based diagnostic tests.
Why did you engage in that career path?
About a year and half ago, I transitioned from studying drug-receptor interactions in academia to the diagnostics field in industry. I love solving biology and chemistry-based problems, but I also wanted to see the positive impact of my work a bit sooner. Developing innovative diagnostic products has that positive impact and the development timelines are generally a lot faster than for drug development.
What makes you want to get up and go to work every morning?
I work with an amazing team of people, so it is just a lot of fun to develop new products together that make a difference in people’s lives. Living through the current pandemic emphasizes the importance of our work even more.
What would you say to the girls and female students who wonder about their work future?
If you want to pursue a career in STEM, but you have a hard time picturing yourself at the finish line, be curious, take the opportunities when they arise, and really just take it one step at a time. One day you will find yourself there.
