We know that companies have a particularly important role to play in minimizing climate change and protecting our planet. That’s why we take a 360° approach to environmental stewardship. Our eco-responsible actions include reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste, developing eco-design and optimizing the lifecycle of our products, and utilizing natural resources as efficiently as possible.
To support our sustainability strategy, we have set out specific environmental targets for 2030. These include lowering our greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% by 2030 in comparison with 2019 (in absolute value). This ambitious target is in line with current best practices: it has been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative and is consistent with levels required to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement.
We actively work to reduce our emissions in all our operations and along the entire value chain. To this end, we collaborate with our network of suppliers and logistics partners to improve the Company’s carbon footprint.
- We use sea freight rather than air freight whenever possible. Air freight emits more than 10 times the amount of CO2 compared to other means of transportation. In late 2019, maritime transportation accounted for 34% of total transport. This percentage remained steady at 32% in 2020, at a time when global access to transportation was extremely challenged and meeting emergency needs with rapid deliveries was vital.
- We introduced an ambitious program to provide remote maintenance of our instruments. This improves our carbon footprint by reducing travel by technicians who can now provide remote assistance for maintenance operations, customer services and IT updates of systems.
