Overview

THE IMPORTANCE OF INSULIN IN EQUINE HEALTH

Insulin plays a crucial role in maintaining the metabolic balance in horses. All horses are at risk for Insulin Dysregulation and certain subsets of horses including ponies, donkeys, Arabians and mustangs are particularly susceptible. Furthermore, age-related changes in insulin regulation can be associated with EMS (Equine Metabolic Syndrome), a disease where horses may experience abnormal fat deposits, inability to lose weight and infertility. Less frequent but very challenging, laminitis is the most critical clinical sign associated with EMS.1

Insulin testing is the cornerstone for diagnosing and managing EMS. Indeed, horses usually exhibit compensated insulin resistance and do not develop diabetes, reason why glucose measurement is rarely useful.²

VIDAS® Equine INSULIN offers published performance in terms of linearity and precision, with the final objective to ensure reliable results both for the initial diagnosis and for the long-term management of EMS.³
