Multidrug resistance pattern and molecular epidemiology of pathogens among children with diarrhea in Bangladesh, 2019–2021

SUMMARY

Antimicrobial and multidrug resistant (MDR) pathogens are becoming one of the major health threats among children. In Bangladesh, approximately 35,000 deaths each year are reported among children with diarrheal disease. The causative pathogen is accurately identified in less than 5% of these cases, leading to inappropriate use of antibiotics and increasing rates of antibiotic resistance. A recent study investigated the molecular epidemiology and resistance profiles of bacterial isolates associated with diarrheal diseases in children in Bangladesh from 2019-2021. Results detail an alarmingly high incidence of viral co-infections, antibiotic resistance, and multidrug resistant bacterial isolates in many of these cases.
