A Common Allele of HLA is Associated with Asymptomatic SARS-COV-2 Infection

SUMMARY

Recent research has shown that at least 20% of all individuals with COVID-19 infections do not display symptoms of the virus. According to study findings, individuals with the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) allele HLA-B*15:01 were twice as likely to experience an asymptomatic response to COVID-19 compared to those without this specific genetic marker. Genotype data suggests this HLA allele may be associated with pre-existing T-cell immunity that can store information about previous seasonal coronaviruses to help fight off newer strains.
