Lact'Union - A french dairy cooperative

Lactinov is a dairy company specializing in the production of high-quality milk, cream, and infant nutrition products. Every year, it processes over 220 million liters of milk collected from more than 300 collection points, with the support of 550 cooperative members and 3 production sites.

The company ensures consumer satisfaction and compliance with the highest safety standards through rigorous processes and controls at every stage. When products are released from quarantine, Lactinov guarantees that customers receive safe, high-quality products and that the brand image of its partners remains fully protected.

Adopted D-COUNT® since 2005 as an early warning solution

Lactinov’s journey with cytometry and bioMérieux began in 2005, when the company started facing false negatives and needed a more sensitive and reliable method to release its products.

D-COUNT®, used for sterility testing, has been providing Lactinov with a fast, sensitive and reliable method. In early warning, it provides Lactinov a rapid method to detect contamination in real time during their production cycles. Thanks to this solution, Lactinov can detect contamination up to six days earlier than the old method petri dish, which represents 1.4 million finished products saved over 2 years.*

By detecting their non-sterility issues faster, Alexandre Lecleire estimates that "over a million euros are saved in [their] operating account" - obviously enabling them to remain competitive in their markets and to guarantee fair compensation to their producer partners.

More than financial savings, a proven environmental impact in line with Lactinov’s Strategy

The Lact’Union group, of which Lactinov is a part, is deeply engaged in a CSR policy called Lacteu’Responsable, which involves the entire value chain: from upstream to downstream.

This CSR strategy is based on five pillars:

  1. Product quality,
  2. Transparency and equity for all stakeholders,
  3. Animal welfare,
  4. Social responsibility and local engagement,
  5. Respect for the environment.

To assess the lifecycle impact of D-COUNT®, Lactinov partnered with bioMérieux and the innovation agency MAOBI to conduct a one-year life cycle analysis.

This study provided clear insights into the system’s measurable benefits in terms of resource savings, waste reduction, and carbon footprint.

More than 17,943,702 kWh of energy saved thanks to D-COUNT®

Over just two years of production (covering white milk, infant milk, and cream) and thanks to the reduction of energy consumption for refrigeration, storage time, product loss, waste and CO2 emissions., Lactinov achieved measurable results with D-COUNT® compared to traditional Petri dish methods**:

  • 17,943,702 kWh of energy saved
  • 87 tons of waste prevented
  • 409 tons of milk saved from being discarded
  • 873 tons of CO₂ avoided
  • 375,227 m³ of water preserved

These figures could be translated into***:

For Lactinov, adopting D-COUNT® was more than a technical upgrade: it is a strategic choice that aligns food safety with environmental responsibility.

* in case of 1 contamination per 3 types of products each 2 years, and if the contamination is detected after 15 hours of manufacturing
** with D-COUNT® used with a pooling method (2 samples per test) for 24 tests versus petri dish plate for a contamination detected at H34 on a 2 year production (white, infant, cream)
*** equivalences of cumulative 24-hour test with pooling for milk, infant formula, and cream (24-hour test and laboratory test) if the contamination is detected after 34 hours of manufacturing

Milk: Average yield of a French cow: a cow produces approximately 8,938 kg of milk per year (in 2023), meaning that 17 dairy cows are needed to produce 155 tons of milk per year, according to IDELE (French Livestock Research Institute).
