bioMérieux strengthens its position in bacteriology with the acquisition of the Spanish firm Biomedics

Marcy l'Etoile, France - April 2nd, 2007. bioMérieux pursues its growth with the acquisition of Biomedics, specializing in the production of culture media, a strategic activity for bioMérieux.

bioMérieux, world leader in the field of in vitro diagnostics, announces today that it has acquired the Spanish firm Biomedics.

Founded in 1976, Biomedics is a privately-held company, headquarted in Madrid. A leader in Spain in the field of bacteriology, particularly in culture media, Biomedics has an output of 11 million Petri dishes per year. The company employs 30 people, with 2006 sales of 4.1 million euros.

This acquisition will enhance the company’s culture media production capacity to meet the constantly increasing market demand. This move will also enable bioMérieux to reinforce its presence in the Spanish and Portuguese markets.

Biomedics brings us not only new production capabilities for our culture media, but also a team with an expertise that will help us to better satisfy our customers’ needs", says Stéphane Bancel, bioMérieux Chief Executive Officer.

In the coming years, bioMérieux will invest in this site to increase its long-term industrial capacity. bioMérieux has a worldwide network of culture media production sites with its main site in Craponne (France) and regional sites in Basingstoke (England), Brisbane (Australia), Lombard, Illinois (United States), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and, as of now, Madrid (Spain).
