Advancing EHEC Testing Methods
With a simple, streamlined workflow that can be easily applied across food operations susceptible to EHEC contamination, GENE-UP® PEC improves confidence in detection of true EHEC. It reduces the time needed for screening and confident release of PEC negative products, minimizing unconfirmed positives that would lead to unnecessary time and cost spent holding products awaiting further confirmation.

Unmatched Accuracy
According to the USDA (Constituent Update - June 28, 2024), GENE-UP® PEC is more efficient than existing testing methods currently in use, leading to significant reductions in non-confirmed positives and in time spent holding product while awaiting secondary result confirmation. This ultimately reduces testing costs and brings more confidence to your brand when releasing product.
Because of the increased accuracy of GENE-UP® PEC in detecting adulterant E. coli strains, the FSIS has stated that GENE-UP® PEC-screened negative samples can be confidently released into commerce, helping producers release products faster and increasing efficiency. The test kit is designed to complement and enhance current methods, enabling food safety programs to be both more flexible and more precise.
Combat EHEC In Your Operation
GENE-UP® PEC is part of bioMérieux’s full suite of EHEC solutions, which detect adulterant EHEC serogroups, for more precise, comprehensive, and actionable results — so that safe product can be released with confidence.

A Smarter PCR Assay Enabling the Power of Co-Location
Most commercially available PCR tests can detect the presence of both Shiga toxin (stx) genes and intimin (eae) genes but are incapable of indicating whether these genes are co-located within a single organism and indicate a true pathogenic E. coli.
Historically there are inherent limitations of screening for the eae and stx genes that, when co-located within an E. coli bacteria, can cause human illness. Because of the way these PCR tests are inherently designed, it can be difficult to determine whether the conditions exist within a single cell that will truly lead to an adulterant strain. This can lead to high numbers of non-confirmed positives, which means unnecessary effort, time, and money spent on confirmation processes, increased time-to-market, and product having to be potentially scrapped or diverted.
GENE-UP® PEC utilizes a novel molecular diagnostic target to rapidly detect strains that contain both stx genes and eae genes within the same organism, significantly reducing unconfirmed positive results. Until now, no other real-time PCR technology has been able to deliver this level of precision and insight.
Because of its high specificity and strong correlation with genomic co-location of stx and eae genes, GENE-UP® PEC negative samples can be released to commerce.
