BACT/ALERT® FAN® Plus Media
Fast Detection. Strong recovery. Actionable Results.
Effective management of bloodstream infections (BSIs) and sepsis relies on fast, accurate, and reliable blood culture results. BACT/ALERT® FAN Plus Media is engineered to support earlier detection and may enable reliable laboratory decision making.1
Designed for both centralized and decentralized workflows, our bottles deliver performance across a wide range of pathogens while supporting patient sample safety through a unique polycarbonate gas impermeable design. Antimicrobial neutralizing resins may support antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) and laboratory efficiency.1,2,3

Innovation Inside the BACT/ALERT FAN Plus Media Bottles
BACT/ALERT FAN PLUS Culture Media is designed to support laboratories where diagnostic gaps are most costly; especially in pretreated patients, sepsis cases, and delayed entry workflows up to 24 hours.2,3
Our blood culture bottles feature adsorbent polymeric beads that neutralize antimicrobials, promoting organism growth and recovery.2 The media is designed to support AMS initiatives that may enable earlier pathogen detection, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), which contributes to improved organism recovery in patients already receiving antimicrobial therapy. 3,4
A specialized liquid emulsion sensor at the bottom of each bottle visibly and irreversibly changes color in response to CO₂ production from microbial growth.2
Proven advantages of FAN PLUS Media include:2,3,4
- Up to 34% improvement in microorganism recovery
- Mean time to detection (15.5–18.2 hours)
- BACT/ALERT FA/FN Plus media is FDA cleared for blood and sterile body specimens. No additional enrichment media needed.
- Detection of approximately 98% of isolates within 72 hours
- Easy to read fill line indicating appropriate blood volume when collecting samples
Blood Culture Automation for All Clinical Laboratory Workflows
BACT/ALERT FAN Plus media bottles are built to support safety, efficiency, and flexibility across diverse laboratory environments.
Workflow focused design features include:2
- Shatter resistant, lightweight polycarbonate bottles that are easily transferred to the laboratory.
- Gas impermeable, multilayer design supporting aerobic and anaerobic growth
- Room temperature storage (15–30°C), ready to use, with up to 12-month shelf life
- Compatibility with pneumatic transport systems
These features help reduce handling risks, simplify storage, and support both centralized and decentralized blood culture workflows.
WORKSAFE™ Blood Culture Kits
Standardized blood culture collection practices are critical to reducing contamination and improving diagnostic confidence. Evidence suggests that when collection is performed using evidence‑based bundles—including education, proper antisepsis, and standardized technique—laboratories can significantly improve compliance and consistency.7,8
BACT/ALERT WORKSAFE Blood Culture Collection Kits can support these best practices by providing the essential components needed for safe and efficient collection. When used with standardized protocols, pre‑packaged collection kits have been shown to reduce blood culture contamination, supporting more reliable results and antimicrobial stewardship efforts.7
