As of Sept. 1, 2026, the CDC reported 18,445 laboratory-confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis, 990 hospitalizations, and 2 deaths. This multi-state outbreak far exceeded previous seasonality in the occurrence of this parasite across the U.S., with 1,180 laboratory-confirmed cases from May 1 to Aug. 31, 2025.

This summer’s Cyclospora outbreak brought with it an opportunity for learning best practices and a reminder that surveillance monitoring and community data can help healthcare providers, municipalities, and government agencies be ready for the next outbreak. 

Lesson 1: Early identification of pathogens is key. 

Identifying the illness accurately and early on is key to effective care. With point-of-care testing available via the BIOFIRE® TORCH® and BIOFIRE® SPOTFIRE® Gastrointestinal (GI) Panels, patients could receive an accurate diagnosis early and begin treatment sooner.

Lesson 3: Surveillance monitoring is essential to better preparedness.
