Mobilizing diagnostics to support the Ebola response

In line with our public health mission, bioMérieux and BioFire Defense, a bioMérieux company, are mobilizing to support ongoing efforts related to the current Ebola outbreak in Africa.
Building on more than 60 years of expertise in diagnostics and infectious diseases, and a global presence in over 160 countries, bioMérieux together with BioFire Defense’s specialized capabilities in biothreats and emerging infectious diseases—is uniquely positioned to support healthcare organizations and governments in preventing and containing outbreaks.
Recommended by the U.S. Centers of Disease Control and Prevention as the test of choice, the BIOFIRE® Global Fever Special Pathogens Panel includes an Ebola spp. target designed to detect multiple Ebola species, including Bundibugyo ebolavirus, the species associated with the current outbreak. Alongside ebolavirus detection, this panel simultaneously screens 15 other fever-causing pathogens, which has differential diagnosis value in settings where multiple febrile illnesses co-circulate. The ability to quickly provide a differential diagnosis between common febrile illnesses such as malaria versus Bundibugyo ebolavirus, enables more effective patient management than single target IVDs.
bioMérieux and BioFire Defense teams are working closely with the Ministries of Health in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, along with local distribution partners and public health stakeholders, to monitor and assess diagnostic needs across affected regions.
Together, we are mobilizing team members, increasing production and ensuring those communities have access to the necessary rapid, reliable diagnostics to enable earlier detection and stronger containment of the outbreak.
