BIOFIRE Syndromic Trends Website Updated with SARS-CoV-2 Data
New Features, New Interface
The public-facing SyndromicTrends.com website now includes detection-rate information for the BIOFIRE® Respiratory 2.1 (RP2.1) Panel, including data for SARS-CoV-2 (the pathogen that causes COVID-19). Now visitors can view a stacked area chart of detection-rate data for each of the 22 pathogens detected by the BIOFIRE RP2.1 Panel. The chart includes information beginning from late June 2020 to the present.
SyndromicTrends.com displays data based on the BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Respiratory (RP, RP2) Panels, BIOFIRE RP2.1 Panel, and the BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Gastrointestinal (GI) Panel. BIOFIRE test results from US laboratories contributing to BIOFIRE® Syndromic Trends (Trend) are de-identified, exported, aggregated, and presented on the website.
The website also features a newly updated user interface. Users can view data for the BIOFIRE RP Panels or toggle to the BIOFIRE RP2.1 Panel, which is the panel that includes a target for SARS-CoV-2. Simply click the blue respiratory icon on the left-hand side of the page to switch views between the panels. Below the respiratory icon is a gastrointestinal icon that leads to data from the BIOFIRE GI Panel.
To view pathogen-specific data, click on the funnel icon on the right-hand side of the page. Viewers can select a particular pathogen to see its data or select a category, like influenza A, which includes three subtypes (and a category for no subtype). SARS-CoV-2 data is included with four other common coronaviruses, but users can select the coronavirus group to see a breakout of the five coronaviruses.
For example, if you would like to see detection rates for SARS-CoV-2, click on the blue RP icon on the left hand side and select RP2.1, then on the right hand side click on the funnel icon and scroll to Coronaviruses. Click on “Coronaviruses” to see the category as a whole, or click on a specific pathogen, such as SARS-CoV-2, to see it’s rate of detection.
With the syndromic approach, the multiplex PCR BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Panels test for a comprehensive grouping of targets associated with a particular syndrome, like respiratory or gastrointestinal infections. The SyndromicTrends.com website draws on that detection data to provide US pathogen trend information to healthcare professionals and the community.
BIOFIRE Syndromic Trends
The public-facing SyndromicTrends.com website is fueled by data imported from BIOFIRE customers who participate in BIOFIRE Syndromic Trends, which is a software feature available to users of the BIOFIRE RP Panels, BIOFIRE GI Panel, BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) Panel, and BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Blood Culture Identification (BCID) Panel.
By contributing to BIOFIRE Trend, institutions can gain access to pathogen trend data for their own organization, as well as regional and national trend data. BIOFIRE Trend participants receive weekly email reports with local and regional information. They can also login to an online dashboard to dive deeper into their location and laboratory-specific data, as well as generate and download custom reports.
This near real-time pathogen circulation data can help local healthcare organizations and public health institutions detect outbreaks early on, enabling them to prepare for an uptick in cases.
The data collection process removes all protected health information by aggregating and de-identifying the data. The process has been certified, by expert determination, as compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Syndromic testing generates data that can be vital for infectious disease doctors, antimicrobial stewardship committees, infection control committees, and epidemiologists. By providing that data, BIOFIRE Trend enables healthcare organizations to get the most out of their BIOFIRE® FILMARRAY® Systems.
