Acute kidney injury (AKI), a sudden reduction in kidney function, is associated with a high rate of prolonged hospitalization, in-hospital mortality and increased expenses for hospitals. Many studies have found that AKI is widely preventable.

Fighting underlying infections in critically ill or septic patients requires appropriate use of antimicrobials—however, antimicrobials also may exacerbate risk of AKI, C. diff infection, neurotoxicity, or any of a host of potential complications.
